I’m a native New Yorker and a photographer. One of my favorite things to do is to walk and bike around and capture what’s happening on the streets of the city.
As of 2026, I am also a member of the local press here in New York City. You'll probably see me out documenting lots of things, particularly protests.
I have used a variety of cameras and lenses over the years. My favorite camera and lens combination used to be an old Nikon D5100 with an even older Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM lens. Sadly, that camera broke -- shutter failure -- while I was out shooting an event! I used it for many years and think it was a great setup. I'll let you know what I replace it with.
I also use an old Olympus EM-10 if I want to travel light, which Micro Four Thirds (m4/3) cameras are great for. To pair with the EM-10 I have a bunch of different lenses, but use a Lumix 14mm f/2.5 lens most of the time, giving me a 28mm field-of-view. I feel the 28mm field-of-view is great for general photography, it’s neither “too tight” nor too wide. Other lenses I use often are the Lumix 20mm f/1.7, the Lumix 25mm f/1.7, an Olympus 45mm f/1.8, and a Lumix 45-200mm zoom.
Finally, I have a Nikon D700 full-frame camera that I use almost exclusively with a Nikon 50mm f1.8D lens. I use this for "people" assignments such as working with models or photographing parades. That combination gives great skin tones and beautiful shallow depth-of-field for isolating subjects, and doesn't distort faces.
As you can see, my camera gear is nothing fancy. It’s old and inexpensive. But it has worked well for me over the years. I do a lot of post-processing work in Photoshop, and I think I like editing more than being out there and taking pictures. Especially in the winter.
Recently I got a GoPro Hero 11 and found that I love taking videos with it. It gives a sort of "cinematic" look to everyday life in New York City. I never thought I would be into video, but it's something I really enjoy, at least with the GoPro since it's very simple to use.
